Here's a brief procedure for removal and installation of the 3rd brake light trim based on work done for a 1991 NA 2+0. The trim piece tends to fade over time and becomes burgundy in color compared to the original black. Replacing it is a nice way to get that new car feeling again.
Tools required: Phillips and flat screwdrivers, 8 mm socket, needle-nose pliers
Procedure: 1. Pry the nut cover off and remove the nut underneath on both passenger and driver sides (1). Remove the nut cover retaining clip and save. 2. Remove the screws holding the interior hatch trim and cargo cover hooks (2).
3. Remove the screw above the hatch latch bar (3) along with trim piece.
4. Slide the interior trim downwards to remove it. There are two rubber pieces inside the trim, probably to prevent rattles. Try to note where the two rubber pieces go because they fell out on me and I couldn’t tell exactly where they went. 5. Remove the two nuts now exposed (4).
6. Carefully pry the exterior trim piece up while pushing the clip tabs in through the access holes in the hatch (5). A small flat bladed screwdriver can help to push the tabs in. Once I released one clip shown at location (5), the next clip over came loose easily. Slide the entire piece over a little and the other 2 clips will pop off the trim piece. You can then work the clips out with pliers after you remove the trim piece.
7. Unplug the wiring harness and remove old trim piece. 8. Slide the clips into position (they can slide within their retaining rails) by test fitting the new trim piece. Snap the clips into place with some pressure. Reinstall the nuts (4) and (1), making sure to install the nut cover clips on (1) first. Slide the interior trim piece upward back into place, postition the cargo hooks, and install screws (3) and (2). Snap on nut covers (1) and you’re done.
