A local Z specialist used to hammer a piece of rebar through the gallery and call it good.
I personally like to see a clear V shape gallery from front to back.
Knock all the core plugs out of the block, probably need to drill and slide hammer the three in the valley out. Work your way from both ends with a short rounded carbide burr as far as you can reach then change over to a 6” burr and get the centre of the galley. Some can be reached through the valley core plug holes but be careful not to nick the sealing surfaces of the core holes.
I do take a long punch and a hammer to knock out the worst of the casting flash in the centre if it is totally blocked or has a large vertical piece of flash on the block centre line that is difficult to grind out with a burr.
Lower speed and good control of the extended burr is necessary, it’s a weapon if allowed to chatter or ricochet around the galley. Don’t just stick it in and let if wail, you will end up bending the burr or damaging yourself.
Make sure you get all the debris out of the water jackets, especially if you knocked some large chunks out.
I usually do this before the block goes for hot tanking, so that will get the remaining trash out.
I’ve currently got a 94 vert block in for a TT build that is totally blocked in the centre.
