Subject	starter grinding?

Message	when i try to start the car occasionally i'm getting some grinding. i turn the key, wait a few seconds for engine diagnostics, then firmly push the clutch pedal to the floor. guess i'm doing that right. i'm going tp get under the car and make sure the start is on tight. if the problem persists is this sign of a bad starter? and if it is would installing a new starter simply be a direct bolt-on or does it need adjusting or shimming? thanx
