Message I have tried using the stethoscope on the timing covers, the valve covers but its hard to pinpoint it as its so loud and in rhythm with the camshaft.

Its had a very in-depth over haul, all the casting flash was removed from the block, the oil galleys were all removed and cleaned with rifle brushes same with the check valves and restrictors in the head, crank weight welded crank sludge traps drilled and tapped and so on blocks etc all this - the bottom end - was put together and balanced by a marine engineering specialist. The heads were just cleaned and had a valve job but no new parts. New oil pump too..

Cranking it by hand it makes no noise, start it up and it appears, iv'e ran it with the covers off and can see no issue, looked inside the intake and the intake valves all seem to work as they should. Im hopeful its the VTC sprockets but the test to turn VTC on and off does nothing to quiet the noise, i have made sure the actuators are opening by using a stethoscope and made sure they get oil, which they do.

When the rebuild was done I swapped in JWT HD vtc springs to the stock vtcs on stock cams, so i'm thinking that maybe damaged it.

I'm changing the VTC sprocket out tomorrow and carrying out a leak down test, will report back with my findings.
