Message	The direction in which the socket is installed is irrelevant. Ideally, it should be installed with it's notch facing the Red LED. Just don't forget to insert the chip with it's notch facing toward the Red LED. You indicated that your engine "was running really rough and not holding an idle" with the chip not installed. I don't believe your engine should be running at all with the chip not installed.
