I remember using an aftermarket shiftknob of my first auto Z and IIRC I screwed the knob onto the plastic upperhalf so you can push the whole thing down to allow gear selection. I dont remeber having any problems with this besides this shifter being really tall.
Im not sure if you can shorten the shaft but at one point I used a knob that sat lower and screwed it on all the way down with the selector button depressed. This worked fine but you have to make sure you dont bump the shifter while driving or it can throw the car into the wrong gear or worse neutral/park/reverse. I definitely wouldn't recommend doing it that way though, just try to find one with a button on top if you want it to sit lower.
