cranking the engine doesn't do a very good job in building oil pressure purely on the fact that the engine cranks at maybe 250rpm. You'd be better off doing the vacuum route. What I do, and have done on 4 engines(including my own), is fill the oil filter completely will oil, install filter, start engine. Everytime that I have done it this way, my oil pressure guage comes up within a second or two. If assembly lube was properly used, you won't cause any harm. If you start the engine and dont see oil pressure after a couple of seconds, shut off and inspect.
