I was driving my 1990 300ZX TT and the temp gauge is always rock steady at just below 9 O'clock. About a year ago this happened and it happened again yesterday. Cool 60F air temps, slow steady traffic...my gauge starts to rise steadily, went all the way to the top stayed there for about 10 seconds and then slowly returned to normal. I never smelled any "overtemp" and car ran/idled perfectly the whole time. Thermostat?, dirty/corroded sensor? When I unplug the sensor, gauge goes to zero...so I do not believe it is connector corrosion. ANY IDEAS/SUGGESTIONS?
