Message All below information refers to troubleshooting a speedometer issue on a 1991 TT with a manual transmission.

To test the speed sensor out of the car:
Remove the snap ring and gear from the sensor and place the shaft of the sensor in the chuck of a drill. Connect a multi-meter set to AC voltage to the two pins on the connector and spin the drill while holding the sensor housing. You should see a voltage that increases with RPM. With my cordless drill maxed out I saw a voltage of 6.5v. If you do not see any voltage or voltage variation with speed the sensor is likely faulty.

Wire tracing:
From the speed sensor connector there is a yellow/black wire that runs through the alternator harness to a connector behind the passenger headlight. The yellow/black wire continues through the main body harness to the top (black) connector on the left side of the cluster housing.

After going through the speedometer it then exits the cluster via a yellow/green wire down to the passenger foot well where it connects to a white connector which then ultimately terminates at pin 53 at the ECU connector.

Hope that helps anyone that might be having the same issue in the future.

Later,

Eric
