Message You need to get to the vacuum hose that activates the EGR and when the engine is idling normal at that stage the EGR should be closed, it only opens at some rpm point above idle. Then place mouth/or hand pump vacuum on that hose and the idle should stumble. You can also first do a vacuum gage test and look at the needle for anything beyond rock steady at about 19 to 20 "Hg would indicate an issue. This vacuum test is old school but it does reveal a lot, been doing it for years. Here is a complete description of what vacuum gage testing will show:
