Message	is to disconnect the coil pack on that cylinder, it should (nearly) silence the rod knock if it is coming from that cylinder. If your head gasket is bad you would definitely need machining and oversized gaskets. If you are pulling it off you should have a shop check it while its apart. Decking is cheap (around the $50 range) and gaskets are reasonable.
