I finally drove my car around enough yesterday to become convinced that whatever the initial burning smell and smoke was it is no more. I drove around at op temp, watched gauge, stopped many times to look under the hood and things seem normal. My only thought is that maybe I had oil and other junk from the plenum pull that had fallen onto the exhaust manifold and that's what initially heated up and burned off on the first start up and I just panicked too early. Glad to report it seems back to normal. The injector issue though is a real intermittent problem that appears to be a combination of several failing injectors and ragged connectors making intermittent contact so I'm going with the suggestions here to replace injectors with the kit that Bernie sells. It's a nice kit. Thanks guy for the help troubleshooting!
