Message	It only comes on for electrical issues, not mechanical, so your example of timing belt breaks not turning it on is non-sensical. In general, the check engine light is not a critical problem (as you imply above), and in modern cars it's an indicator that the emissions equipment is malfunctioning. In our cars, it's an indictor that an electronic component is failing - this is rarely catastrophic (PTU failure at highway speed being an example exception), though it can prevent the car from starting / running.
