Message	grade steel to exceed the strength needed for the adaptors, the only possible reason I could see would be if the valves contacted the piston while the motor was running, then the sudden stop in the valves train (while the cam gear still was under load from the belt) could possibly be enough force to cause a sheer. I cant comment on their motion however.
