I've read Ash's FAQ. You're supposed to "strike the lifter progressively harder until the body pops loose".
Do I understand it right that I'm supposed to slam a hammer to the top of the lifter where the hole is? What's happening physically when I do this? Am I bending the top surface sufficiently to push the body out the bottom? Does the lifter need to be full of oil to allow the body to come up, i.e. with an air-filled lifter the body will never come out? Doesn't beating on top of the lift risk deforming it?
