So, there are 2 things that end up getting connected to the handle. One for the door lock itself, and one for the handle to pull the latch. Are you sure you aren't swapping the 2? One goes on pretty easily, and the other one can really be a bitch and a half to get to go on properly. One trick I found for the tough one is to jam the inside door handle open about 3/4 of the way, which raises that piece of metal up enough to put it in a more convenient place. Once you have both pieces connected to the handle, it still takes a little jiggling and twisting to get it to back into place. Hope this helps. Otherwise, make sure your door lock and latch are working correctly by pulling on the rods by hand.
