If it got above the H on the gauge... I would say that's a pretty safe bet. When the gauge is at about 3/4 you are about 210-215, over the H you are around 240. That is enough to warp heads on an iron block/aluminum head motor. The old coolant wouldn't cause overheating that bad unless it was really low. You had a thermostat stick, or your radiator was plugged. A VG that is is tight, and everything working properly should never get much above midway on the gauge (180 to 200 degrees). If it gets to 3/4, pull over and cool it down, cause something is wrong.
