If your O2 was telling the ECU to feed you way lean, you would get knock. If it was way rich, you'd smell gas. My understanding of how the O2s are used, it wouldn't cause sputtering issues. If you're sputtering all the time, maybe you're more than 1 tooth off at the crank or somewhere else. Anyways, that was just my experience. I wasted a lot of time chasing down every other possibility trying to avoid redoing the timing belt.
