Subject	Coolant temp problems continue :-/

Message	Recently I've noticed my aftermarket water temp gauge spiking slightly. Today I started up and drove for about 5 minutes with both my stock and aftermarket temp gauges showing nothing. They stayed at full cold and then suddenly both went up to the 180 mark.... I have no idea what to make of this. Could this indicate the beginning of the end for the water pump? I haven't checked the coolant levels yet as it's late. Anything simple that could cause this?
