try to drive car, shift in gear, etc. and inspect again for any wetness. It should not be wet at all. If it is after your cleaning and driving, then you've found your problem and it would explain ALL your symptoms - sudden onset of symptoms, air in lines, lack of hydraulic pressure at times. And any rust hole would continue to get larger over time, therefore making your symptoms more severe as well. For some reason I thought you had already inspected that area of the car. Slave cylinders eventually rust out. Replaced mine in 99 when it failed on me in an intersection as I was turning left - thought I was going to get broadsided as a sitting duck. But, through lots of double clutching I was able to get it work enough so I could drive it the 15 miles back home...
