Message as I could tell. She's been down for a year+, but I never really noticed any smoke, even from a cold start. When I was flushing my coolant system a couple months ago prior to pulling the engine, I noticed that after idling for a good while (15-20 minutes to bring distilled water up to temp and open thermostat before draining again) when I revved the engine I could see some oil smoke, but that was really the first time I noticed it.

Once I had the exhaust manifolds off and looked up the exhaust ports I could see that several of the valves looked oily and nasty on the stem and top of the valve, and those exhaust ports themselves were sort of black and damp with oil residue. That's what really made me want to change the seals more than anything. I don't think I would have been bothered enough had I not pulled the manifolds and seen how nasty it looked.

Mike
