I had a similar issue and had to take my gauge cluster apart to fix it. After I got the face off (the black part), I sprayed some lubricant on the dial mecanism that rolls all the numbers (not the numbers themselves, but everything behind them). I think it was the trip reset button/rod that was messing mine up. The spring attached to it was pretty crusty and was not letting it function properly. Be careful not to spray too much if you try this because any excess gets all over everything when you try to put it back together.
