| I have always had a small amount of intermittent smoke since i did my TT swap a few years ago, becoming more frequent over time, this was expected as i picked the engine up for cheap and did not know the history of it. Late last year i decided to replace the CHRA's, throw on a set of manifolds, fuel rails etc. I finally got around to finishing it in March and it seemed the smoking problem was gone. After about 25 miles it has come back Smoke symptoms(very distinctive burning oil smell): -Cold start: Smokes on startup and when free revving it just billows out. -Hot start: Still smokes, not nearly as much as cold though, free revving yields much less smoke than cold. -It is hard to keep a close eye on it while driving, but it seems to smoke pretty heavily on deceleration and while idling following the decel; On acceleration it seems to come out heavy for the first few seconds then tapers off. -It burns through a quart of oil in ~50 miles. -There is oil dripping off of the turbine side of the DS side turbo that appears to be coming from inside(I assume there is that much unburnt oil making its way through the combustion chamber and pooling in the turbo) -All charge piping and TB's are bone dry, plenum is bone dry aside from the bottom of the runners where they meet the lower plenum. -Engine is quiet and smooth until the plugs foul up with oil in ~15 miles, and then cylinders drop as they can no longer fire. Pretty certain it is not a turbo to blame as the piping is all dry. This leaves only two possibilites, Valve seals or rings. I ran a compression test and numbers were 145, 141, 139, 140, 145, 148, not the greatest, but within spec and the variance isnt huge. Though all of the oil in the chambers could hide a bad cylinder i suppose.
If you have any input whether to blame the rings or valve seals please post, I would prefer valve seals vs rings as those would be much cheaper and easier.. but seems like it could be rings.
I have pulled the upper plenum back off and you can see the pics attached with the masses of oil..
