Yep, the new gear is on the way to the local dealership. You are right. The axis of the pinion shaft is eccentric to the axis of the mounting of the sensor. The gear diameters differ by 2 millimeters, and the eccentricity of this sensor puts the pinion axis about 1 millimeter upward. Spin it around 180° and that's downward 1 millimeter which should make the smaller blue gear happy. I believe that some people have gotten away with just swapping the gears. It must have been pretty borderline for my car, because I drove it for 15 or 20 happy minutes before the shredding. Perhaps for some people the tolerances stack up in their favor, for you and me, they didn't.
