| There should have been no need to touch the CAS. Unfortunately now that he has moved it, he will have to get it adjusted back to proper base timing. Unless he happened to scribe a market on the CAS that indicates proper base timing alignment. Your question with rotation of the cam, no it does not matter which way you rotated it. I know they tell you to put #1 at TDC, but when ever I do this I actually put #1 at TDC and then rotate it very slightly backwards so none of the pistons are fully up. This guarantees that no matter what you do with the cam gears rotation wise prior to timing belt install, the valves will never contact any pistons, including #1. Then once I have all intake and exhaust cams set, I just move #1 to TDC and put on the belt. The CAS should not have been touched, and would have been in the exact position it was previously. I find it strange for de944 saying he always has to reset the CAS. That's not normal from my experience. I've replaced...LOTS...of timing belts over the years in the 300zx and never, ever has the CAS been or required to have been touched. Car works perfectly. I vote to re-check the teeth between each mark. Count 'em and double check. There are people who have set them just 1 tooth out to the crank gear and had their cars run very poorly.
