Message damage.

What brand and weight oil have you been using?

There are several cleaners on the market. Marvel MO, Shaler Riselone, etc. All are OK for limited use. But preferred to get engine clean and use straight oil no additives.

Marvel MO is a detergent cleaner and adding a quart will not damage anything and might just work. However if you add it be sure to remove a quart before you add or the engine pan will be overfilled and that is not good.

If you add the Marvel run it for a couple hundred miles and then dump it and change the oil to a brand name 10w 30.

I have a 92 NA w 86k (bought in 92) and have never had lifter tick engine is quiet as a mouse. Been using Castrol 10w 30 dino most of the time, several years with Mobil 1 synthetic 10w 30, and a few fills with Valvoline dine. Been doing 4k to 5k or each 4 to 5 months if mileage not met oil and filter dumps. OEM, WiX or Purolater filters.
