But IIRC, you need to get on the dyno. You set the VTC release RPM to be at your peak HP. Moving it downwards is not right - you want it to go up...unfortunately my rusty mind isn't remembering clearly... So, This is a dyno chart on my Z where VTC release was set at 5900 rpm. Look what happened to the cars power the moment it hits that... 
So I started to increase the VTC release RPM...and I think wound up setting it so high it would never reach it.
