There are two phases for the piston in a 4-stroke engine. For every revolution of the camshaft, the crank has two revolutions. That's why I said to recheck your timing, not your belt. Your crank may be 180 degrees off! That is one revolution. Even if your crank is off by 180 degrees, you will have compression (as you said).
