Message The maximum temperature registered should (?) be the same if they are giving the same readings because I moved the probes around to get the maximum possible reading from each one and then repeated it again.

I was thinking that with EGT or CHT the conditions for detonation can be detected rather than the results of detonation (vibration). I am no expert so this could be false. I have asked a reputable tuner about this and he said that EGTs will rise during detonation because timing is being retarded by the ECU so it is not that useful.

This makes sense but I would think that prevention is better than the cure (retarding timing). One article I found states that EGTs will lower during detonation because more heat is being transferred to the pistons and combustion chamber (so CHTs would rise):
