Message	unplugging it won't test anything. You need to figure out a way to activate the solenoid. If the noise goes away, you have verified your VTC sprockets are bad. I activate my VTC using this: [ http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/forums/classified/view/130962/Blazt-Nissan-consult-ecu-interface-with-datascan-v152-and-d.html ] or, you can ground the appropriate wire with the connectors plugged in. I don't remember which one it is at the moment, but I think it green with a black stripe (or maybe red)
