Message neg pressure doesn't mean backwards flow. vacuum is created by the air getting sucked through the engine faster than it can be naturally supplied through the intake. This creates lower pressure in the manifold compared to the atmospheric pressure. Even though vacuum is used to run engine accessories (e.g. cruise control), vacuum is really an indirect measure of unused engine potential, since the vacuum is created by the restrictions of the intake manifold against flow.
