Message I am newbie, so take with grain of salt, my PTU looks like it's my problem, but yours could be dying? With less reliable spark, unburnt fuel comes out. Mine gave some smoke before it died, a 90, PTU was replaced in 94, but they tend to fail from heat or something. I'm a newbie like I say, your issue could be completely different. PTU may not give a consistent error code, either, I find. I have no 21 code showing on mine, but my wiring is still messed up so who knows. Good luck with it. If it's the PTU, it's around 200 parts and two screws right in front of engine, easy.

:I recently bought a '91 NA 300zx and took it to be inspected today. The person I bought the car from gave me the latest inspection records from September 2007 and the CO reading was less than half of the maximum allowable reading. I had the car inspected today and the car failed because the CO reading was more than 150% of the allowable amount. I have no idea where to start with diagnosing this.
:A few things to note that may help to figure out what's up:
:1. I added some STP fuel injector cleaner crap to the fuel tank recently (I had gone through one and a half tanks since adding the cleaner before the inspection)...maybe that had an effect?
:2. I did the ECU self-diagnostic yesterday and error code 34 (Detonation Sensor Circuit) showed up. Could that have anything to do with this?
:3. I was driving at about 60 mph about 10 days ago (a day or two after adding the fuel injector cleaner) and I noticed some thick smoke coming out of my exhaust. There were no loud noises or other strange things that I observed. Within a few seconds there was no more smoke and since then it hasn't happened again. WTF could this be? At the time I thought it must have something to do with what I added, but that really doesn't make much sense in retrospect...it wouldn't burn up all at once in a matter of seconds because it would've been mixed with the fuel in the tank.
:Anyway where would you suggest I start with diagnosing this problem? I know there are some tricks to pass the emissions test but I'd definitely like to get to the root of the issue.
:Thanks!
:-Gavin
