Message I recently bought a '91 NA 300zx and took it to be inspected today. The person I bought the car from gave me the latest inspection records from September 2007 and the CO reading was less than half of the maximum allowable reading. I had the car inspected today and the car failed because the CO reading was more than 150% of the allowable amount. I have no idea where to start with diagnosing this.

A few things to note that may help to figure out what's up:
1. I added some STP fuel injector cleaner crap to the fuel tank recently (I had gone through one and a half tanks since adding the cleaner before the inspection)...maybe that had an effect?
2. I did the ECU self-diagnostic yesterday and error code 34 (Detonation Sensor Circuit) showed up. Could that have anything to do with this?
3. I was driving at about 60 mph about 10 days ago (a day or two after adding the fuel injector cleaner) and I noticed some thick smoke coming out of my exhaust. There were no loud noises or other strange things that I observed. Within a few seconds there was no more smoke and since then it hasn't happened again. WTF could this be? At the time I thought it must have something to do with what I added, but that really doesn't make much sense in retrospect...it wouldn't burn up all at once in a matter of seconds because it would've been mixed with the fuel in the tank.

Anyway where would you suggest I start with diagnosing this problem? I know there are some tricks to pass the emissions test but I'd definitely like to get to the root of the issue.

Thanks!
-Gavin
