| for timing and fuel. When the ECU sees a knock sensor issue it switches maps to retard the timing and richen the fuel mixture. In a TT when the ECU switches maps it also opens the boost solenoids to limit boost to safer level. This in known as Safety Boost. The symptoms you describe sound more to me like O2 sensors starting to go bad. But the code 34 definitely means a problem with the knock sensor. So fix it first. Follow the other advice given on temporarily replacing with a resistor or do the relocation. And no, the bare wire will not cause an issue unless it touches something else. If the knock sensor fixes do not correct the problem then try the O2's. They are pricey but they don't last forever. They actually start to decay the first time they are used they just happen to work OK for a long time as they wear out. I have seen them fail at 150K or at 45K. A lot depends on driving style, fuel quality and a little luck. If yours have more than 75K miles on them, replacing them will make a noticeable difference and improve mileage. One other possibility is vacuum leaks. Look for old and cracked hoses. KKrofft
