Message	battery cable. Touch + post battery cable to the large stud on the starter that has no wire. The starter should spin up. Touch the small wire to the + of the battery and it should kick the starter drive out to prove the solenoid works. This will tell you it "works" but won't guarantee how much torque it delivers if the brushes are less than perfect or the armature is not right.
