Message I'm trying to research some information before I take the jump. I've gotta do something with my motor - it's got 2 bad oil rings. And it may have an issue with the crank - i blew out an oil seal, and from my poking around, it looks like it was the rear main.

So, what are my options?

I don't want a jdm motor. It's more hassle and money in the long run from what I've seen.

I already have most of the car set up for ~600 hp from my GT600R turbos (gt28r).

I was thinking of going with a rebuilt stage 1 bottom end, but I'm wondering if I could save money by assembling it myself. I pretty much have to buy from Z1 because I live close enough to drive my core down and bring the new motor back for a lot less than shipping would cost.

The goal is to get the most for the money - I have no problem doing any work myself that requires standard mechanic tools (that is, no machining equipment or special balancing tools). I've got a few shops I can use and some outside help, but I've never rebuilt a car engine (just small motors - dirt bikes and such).

So how can I save money by doing things myself? But I don't want to take any shortcuts and end up costing myself later. I want this engine back to spec (the guy I purchased the car from neglected it). Thoughts from those who have done this before?
