Message I've been dealing with those three lights for since last fall. I've posted and searched, but so far the solutions posted have not fixed it.

From the wiring diagram, I'm pretty sure that those three lights are tested with the bulb check circuit. The bulb check circuit is activated by a relay whose coil is powered by +12v from the key when it is in the on position, and grounded by the L terminal of the alternator. When the key is turned on and the motor is not running, the L terminal is effectively a ground, and the relay energizes and those three lights on the dash illuminate. Once the motor starts and the alternator is turning, the L terminal becomes +12v, and the loss of voltage differential (12v on both sides) causes the bulb check relay to deactivate. This is what is supposed to happen.

So, while a bad alternator can cause the problem you are seeing (L terminal not 12v while running), it could also be a problem with the relay, and even a wiring problem.

If your battery voltage is correct, it tends to mean the alternator is good. I would start by pulling the bulb check relay and seeing if the problem goes away. If it does, you know it is either the relay or a problem with the power or L connection to it. Swapping with a known good relay will rule that out.

My problem is that the lights will be off, and then randomly come on and stay on constantly for days or weeks. Then, they will go out again and be fine for a few days. During times where they are lit, my A/C does not work (compressor clutch does not engage).

Because yours fluctuates with rpm, it really makes me think there is a problem with the alternator. Even though the voltage is good, maybe internally something is not working right. I changed my alternator trying to fix my problem and it did NOT correct it. But, mine was constant, not RPM dependent.

Keep us posted on what you find.
