it is very easy for it to snap back when there is a large angular displacement and quick roll rate. if the plastic spacers inside the larger outer spring have disintegrated or do not exist, then the spring will distort and upon an angular displacement of the throttle body, the spring will displace angularly and linearly...basically it will shift to one side and not turn in a perfect circle. there is a spacer on each side of the larger spring to help it keep shape/roundness.
