Message How to fix your 300zx electric antenna.

1.-Remove motor and antenna mast from the car, follow the link below:

2.-The antenna assembly is composed of three parts. Motor, mast holder and the antenna mast (these are the names I use, not the official Nissan names).

3.-I would venture to say that 99% of the failures are due to a broken mast plastic chain.

4.-Since the assembly is already out, as might as well do a total antenna make over.

5.-Open the antenna motor by removing the nut on top and gently pull the cover off.

6.-Remove the antenna spool. The mast chain will uncoil but not big deal.

7.-At this point is probably best to remove the electric motor. Unscrew the two Phillips screws and wiggle the motor out of the box.

8.-With the motor out the gears are now free to spin in both directions.

9.-If the mast chain is broken you can now just pull it out.

10.-Remove the Phillips screw at the base of the mast holder and pull gently on the mast holder to disengage. Once these two pieces separate you can push the antenna mast through the bottom of the holder. See above picture, it’s the Phillips screw on the right hand side.

11.-At this point go back to the antenna box, remove the spool, the white plastic cover and inspect the gears. The gears should spin freely with no resistance and they should be well greased.

12.-If you think you would like to clean up the gears and apply fresh grease (I use teflon grease) proceed as follows:

13.-Remove the E-clip on top of the large gear. Usually pushing with a small screw driver will do the trick.

14.-Pull out all the gears and clean with a rag or paper towels.

Pay attention this little gadget doesn’t fall off. Notice its location and direction.

Once the large gears come off, go ahead and open them up to take them apart.

Clean everything out thoroughly with paper towel.

15-Apply generously amounts of grease to the gears and surrounding areas. Re-assemble back into the box.

17.-Put the new mast through the bottom of the mast holder.

18.-Start feeding the mast chain manually through the top opening of the box until the mast holder goes back to its original location.

19.-Tighten the mast holder screw.

20.-Now put the motor back, wiggle it gently and put the two screws back in place. You are finished rebuilding your antenna.

21.-Since the antenna I was rebuilding was an extra one (not the one I use in my car) I had to devise a test jig.

I used a 12VDC battery from my cordless drill and two jumpers.

By reversing the polarity of the battery to the antenna you can see it go up and down.

Ain’t that neat?

Your antenna is good for the next ten years.
