When I was growing up in Sarasota, before there were mothers against drunk drivers, delinquent dads, gay whales, etc., it was legal to drink at 18 AND drink and drive, as long as you weren't drunk. We used to drive around with open containers in the car all the time, out to the beach. They had "liquor barns" back then that were drive through garages where you didn't even have to get out of your car. You could see the shelves of booze stacked up on both sides of you as you drove through. You just pointed to what you want, the stubbly old guy that worked there dropped it in your car, and off you went. Those perhaps were the good 'ol days, but things definitely were out of hand. A lot of the strict laws since then were reactionary, but justified nonetheless, IMHO. Party on, dudes.
