Message what your background is (education, experience, etc).

It has to do with flow and pressures. It is required that there be a MAS on both sides to equalize the flow into both filters. Remember, the MAS you are actually measuring needs to have exactly half of the total air flowing through it. The shared area only 'adds' the total airflow together. It does this by balancing the 'suction' that the engine produces between the turbo compressor and the filter/MAS unit. The total suction, or airflow, it felt by both MAS units and filters on each side. If one side is missing a MAS unit, its resistance is much less and therefore more air will flow through that side. This causes problems because the other side, with the MAS unit, has greater restriction and less gases will flow through it. Since the ECU is firing the injectors for the amount of air it is seeing through the monitored MAS, it is imperative that the amount it is metering is exactly half of the total air. If it is metering less than half (as which would happen in the case where there isn't a MAS unit on the other side), the engine will run lean. Remember also, the ECU is doubling the pulsewidth of the injectors after determining the pulsewidth necessary for half the total air the engine is ingesting. This is a parameter changed in the ECU to accomodate for this intake setup and it is dependent on the MAS actually metering exactly half of the total airflow.

I'm not sure if you understand what I just said, its sortof complicated to explain why it is necessary for the resistance to be the same on both sides, but I assure you, it is vital.
