Message amount of labor involved, at least in replacing the valve cover gaskets. It means pulling the plenum (2-4 hours), and probably doing the same labor as a timing belt change (around 5-8 hours). If the car's got some miles on it, and the seals were never changed (Nissan doesn't automatically change 'em out at 60K service - trust me, I know this from experience!), then they will eventually start to seep, and then leak. I've not heard of valve covers leaking on our Z's though. But the seals definitely get old and brittle after a while. Not sure why rear main seal would cost so much. Should be about the same as a clutch change. If you can hold off, I'd wait until you change the clutch to do the rear main seal.

And, to answer your question, these cars are very expensive to have worked on. Most sports cars, especially imports, are. If you want to keep the costs down on sports cars, either buy an American muscle car, learn to DIY, or find a good mechanic with some Z32 experience.
