Message I got the results back from a Nissan dealership (Performance Nissan in Duarte, Cali) on the stock 300zx 2+2, automatic that I'm serious about. The compression, frame, engine, etc all checked out w/ flying colors. THe tranny, however, turns out to be a replacement (either junkyard or factory used) and is shifting late -- which I kinda like. I doubt there's a stall converter in there as there are no other mods visible on the car. The service writer said that the late shifting on the auto tranny is putting "extra strain" on the tranny and the engine but I can't be sure how much to be concerned, if at all. Should I be?

Also, they said that the valve covers are "leaking" as is the rear main seal. But when I called back today to verify that (the seller was floored as there are no drip marks below the car) it turns out that it's more "seeping" right now than leaking. Still, how much have y'all paid for:

1.) new valve cover gaskets to be installed

2.) new rear main seal to be installed

I may not do them now but they're issues I plan on using w/ the seller. The dealer quoted me $850 for new valve cover gaskets!!! And $735 for a new rear main seal!!! Are these cars *THAT* expensive to have worked on or is it just the truism of never taking a car to a dealer?
