This isn't rocket science. Show me his dyno back to back with the same conditions and a straight single sized exhaust versus the one that changes in size and I'll show you one that has better power delivery that is smoother. The thing is, most people in the magazines and a great deal that just are into cars only care about peak power. Or at least that is the FIRST focus. For me, I care about how power comes in. I'd bet that taking my 2.5" and making it into a 3.0" would yield a bit more top end, but at the cost of how the boost spools, how power comes in, etc. I don't even see the reason for debate...it has already been proven prior to us slackers on TT.net bringing it up this year :/
