Nissan's resurrected Z surprised no one by capping its debut with a 10Best award. Riding a shortened version of the same rear-drive platform that supports the new Infiniti G35s, the Z possesses all the traits enthusiasts hold dear — precise steering, minimal body roll, decisive responses, abundant grip, and a control layout well-conceived to make the car an extension of the driver's will. The power band of the 287-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 is broad, smooth, and robust, and the engagements of the standard six-speed manual gearbox are positive.
Inside, the Z sports a pair of supportive bucket seats, creative detailing, and an attractive blend of textures. It's one of the more eye-catching interiors we've seen in some time. We're also impressed with the bold, muscular look of the avant-garde styling.

For all that, performance is the proof of the pudding in cars such as this, and the Z delivers. The top-of-the-line Track model sprints to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, pulls a grippy 0.88 g on the skidpad, and stops from 70 mph in 164 feet. Meatier tires and big Brembo brakes give the Track version an edge in adhesion and stopping, but beyond that all Zs are equal — same powertrains, same suspension. Best of all, the price, starting at less than $27,000, is right, too.
