Message I will not do a deal without a non-refundable check anymore. I was screwed multiple times and it cost me big bucks to relist ads because of stupid people. If they don't want to leave a deposit, that's fine. I will just show the car to other people and who ever puts a deposit down or gives me my asking price first, they win!

Scenario: You have 5 people looking at your car. 1 says that they definitely want the car. They just need to get their funds straight. Ok. Hold the car until they get their funds straight? Tell others that the car isn't for sale? No. You get a non-refundable deposit. If they want the car and should be able to get the funds, then it's not a problem. If for some reason the person can't get their funds. You should return the check. And you can keep some money for relisting. I would give it back in that case. If they decide that they want to back out, then keep the money. It was their fault.

I say this because this happened to me a couple of times. By the end of the weekend I was out $100 and the other potential buyers were either not interested anymore or bought another car.

Putting a non-refundable deposit down is not unheard of.
