Message if you try to deposit a check for the car you sold. If it's counterfit the bank will catch it way before the money hits your account and notify you and the police. This was my job for three years. (Hopefully, the guy is smart enough to let the check clear BEFORE transferring the car or title.) The person who actually did the counterfiting is who they are after. Not the poor person who got duped. Of course you will lose the NSF fee. (non-sufficient funds)
The person who writes the check is liable for whatever is on the front of the check. Whoever cashes the check is liable for whatever is endorsed on the back of the check. The worry is at some point the crook who wrote the check may get your account number off the back of the returned check. If it ever got back to him. Which I doubt it would.
