In Reply To Horsepower or Torque: Which one is better to have? posted by AshsZ of Z1Motorsports.com on August 01, 2003 at 08:12 PM

Message but to get the real answer add a few more variables

1) Wheel Traction
2) vehicle weight
3) Transmission gearing
4) Power Band

To me lots of low end torque is bad on the street. And since we are mostly talking about street use thats what I will base my arguement at.

The relationship between torque traction is simple. To much low end torque will spin the tires. Thus ideally increase patch contact and friction IE get bigger stickier tires.

The relationship between torque and gearing is simple tall gearings means better low end grunt. Normally changing the final gearing will be the easiet way to do it. Notice most NA and Autos use different differential gearing. Taller on Autos and lower on sticks.

And lastly the heavier the car the more torque you will need to get the car moving. Ideally you want a ligher car as it will help in every aspect of the car handling, braking, and acceleration.

Power band is simple you want the most area under the curve as possible.

Now take into consideration a Turbo diesil which has lots of torque but little horsepower. Does this make it fast? No it just makes it able to pull alot of weight.

So now lets to get down to doing the math :-)I have seen a few of the calculations and they all center around rubber compound they are specific to speed and rpm to determine max torque based on the maxinum coefficient of friction.
Something alot of people forget is that when you are sitting and spinning your tires you are not going fast!

Anyways the bottom line answer is easy give me lots of horsepower and lots of road :-) If there is not enough low end torque then give me a 10 speed transmission so I can keep the motor in its sweet spot where it would produce the required torque that is needed.

Thus I would rather have
800RWHP with 500lb/tq
than
700RWHP with 600lb/tq
on a car with a weight around 3500lbs and say 285/40R17

Oh BTW a car we recently did we put some 335/30R18s on Toyo RA1s and after we heated up the tires we turned up the boost to 25PSI on a HKS T04r (good for around 630RWHP) and brake boosted it and the car dead hooked. No wheel spin just hold on and feel the Gs.

Finally if you are trying to get into the debate of bore vs stroke specifically the bore vs stroke on a VG versus a 2JZ you will need to consider a few other factors :-)
