Message engine in.
The SR is all aluminum, quite lightweight, and small. It is the most popular engine here in Japan to put into other cars because it fits in everything and it is very easy to make 400rwhp. The bore and stroke are similar to the VG but it doesn't make very much torque. Con #1, the lack of torque kinda makes this engine a bad choice for heavy cars....... however, when mildly modded (or more) it is still better than the NA VG. Con #2 is the amount of money and mods it takes to make seriously high hp. The pistons and con rods are supposedly good for 400rwhp-ish, the stock sleeves are good to 450rwhp, the stock cams need to get chucked obviously.....the problem here is that you now need to consider staying with hydrolic lifters or going to solid (high performance). Either way you will be needing full head mods, stronger springs, rocker arms, lash killer kit...... With solid lifters you need to have solid lifter cams, solid lifters, and then have the the head properly shimmed. Next is the bottom end again..... the stock crank is not forged so this eventually needs to be upgraded. HKS or Tomei or JUN or Top Secret (and some others) will be gald to help you out. They sell 2.2L kits with a forged stroked fully counterbalanced crank, pistons, and rods. It will set you back about $5k. Personally, as far as 4cyls go I much prefer the FJ20DET. Strong bottom end, great flowing heads, short stroke, high revving engine....need a standalone ecu with this engine though.

The RB26 is a good choice for just about any car that it can fit into, especially if the car of choice is lighter than a GTR. We have a few cars here with this swap and the one, a gutted S13 Silvia with approx 900rwhp, is scary very scary. Stock, the engine is very well balanced and high revving engine. It has a quite a short stroke and a well designed high flowing head (solid lifters are stock)..... they remind me of a motorcycle engine. With bolt-ons you can do about 600rwhp without touching the internals, and some people with a just metal headgasket have done 700rwhp but that is the upper limit. For higher hp things get expensive fast. Stock bottom end and heads are good to about 9000rpms. Fully built heads, with a 2.7L kit (full counter crank, pistons, and rods) can go up to 11,000rpms. Of course full bolt-ons are needed like IC and turbo kit. The only con's to the RB that I see are 1) no support in the US, 2) not all that torquey and hence not the best choice for very heavy cars (VG or 2JZ would be better), 3) prolly gonna lose the 4WD :-( This is part of what makes the GTR so fast.

VG is a big disp engine compared to the SR and RB. It has larger pistons with a considerably longer stroke (forget about revving as high as a RB). The nice thing about the VG is that the bottom end is very strong. The stock crank and block are good to..... prolly 1200rwhp or more. The Puerto Rico Racing team Carteras and Escort both run stock cranks (balanced) and blocks and run low 7's in the QM. The stock pistons and rods are also very strong. A good condition engine can handle 700rwhp on stock internals. The engine is also quite torquey so it is a good match for our heavy Z's. The cons are that 1) Some thicker main journals, or more of them, 2) the engine needs a lot of mods to make huge hp and 3) the aftermarket support is not (yet?) there for us. Our stock intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, intercooler / piping design are not the best and there really isn't much to choose from for affordable bolt on solutions. The SR and RB both have lots of exhaust manifolds, intake manifolds, and IC kits which are semi-affordable and readily available. However, if you are willing to drop the coin on some custom made stuff and a boatload of mods, the VG engine will (hopefully) reward you (me) in the end.
