| First of all when is an intercooler that makes a great big "U" better than one that flows straight thru? How does the side mount IC make a big "U"? It flows straight through as well. Sure, the air coming from the passenger turbo goes into the driver side bank, but that doesn't change with an FMIC. When I think of a "U" shaped flow design, something like this pic comes to mind. Granted, they are oil coolers, but the visual is there. 
No matter how you slice it, the intake piping in the Z is not pretty. All sorts of bends with SMICs or an FMIC. If you have flow data to prove that a FMIC is so much better, please post it so we can see.
